Pelvic Floor Assessment

Understand your symptoms. Understand your body. Feel confident about what to do next.
A pelvic health assessment is a personalised appointment to understand your symptoms, identify what may be contributing to them, and create an individual treatment plan. Pelvic Health Physiotherapy can help with a wide range of bladder, bowel, pelvic pain and intercourse related concerns.
Who is a pelvic health assessment for?
A pelvic health assessment may be appropriate if you are experiencing:
-
Urinary leakage or incontinence
-
A sudden or frequent need to pass urine
-
Difficulty emptying your bladder
-
Pelvic Organ Prolapse or a feeling of heaviness, pressure or bulging
-
Pelvic Pain
-
Pain during or after sex
-
Difficulty with penetration
-
Pelvic floor weakness / difficulty relaxing your pelvic floor
-
Changes in your pelvic health associated with perimenopause and menopause
-
Concerns about your pelvic floor even if you don't currently have symptoms
What happens during your assessment?
Your first appointment is a chance to talk openly about what is happening and what you would like help with. We'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and any factors that may be contributing to your concerns.
I will then carry out a physical assessment relevant to your symptoms. This may include looking at your breathing, posture, movement, abdominal muscles and pelvic floor function.
Where appropriate, an internal vaginal examination may be offered to assess the pelvic floor muscles more specifically. This is not compulsory, and I will always explain why I am recommending an examination and ask for your consent before proceeding with anything. You remain in control throughout your appointment.
What happens after your assessment?
Once we have completed your assessment, I will explain my findings in clear, straightforward language and answer any questions you have.
We can then agree on a personalised treatment plan. Depending on your needs, this can include a range of different management modalities including pelvic floor exercises, relaxation and breathing techniques, advice around bladder or bowel habits, movement and exercise advice, Pilates, hands-on treatment, or strategies to help you manage your symptoms.
Your treatment will be tailored to you - because no two bodies, symptoms or experiences are the same.
You do not have to wait until things are severe...
Pelvic health concerns are common, but that doesn't mean you have to accept them as something you simply have to live with.
If something has changed, doesn't feel right, or is stopping you from doing the things you enjoy, a pelvic health assessment can be a useful first step.
