Comprehensive Postnatal Assessment

Pregnancy and childbirth can have a significant impact on your body, and recovery doesn't necessarily finish at the traditional 6-week check.

A comprehensive postnatal assessment is a personalised appointment to look at how you are recovering, identify any areas that may need support and create an individual plan to help you move forward.

Who is a comprehensive postnatal assessment for?

A postnatal assessment may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • Urinary leakage or incontinence

  • A sudden or frequent need to pass urine

  • Difficulty emptying your bladder

  • Bowel symptoms

  • Pelvic organ prolapse symptoms

  • A feeling of heaviness, pressure or bulging

  • Pelvic or lower back pain

  • Abdominal separation or concerns about your abdominal muscles

  • Pelvic floor weakness

  • Difficulty relaxing your pelvic floor

  • Pain during or after sex

  • Pain or discomfort around a caesarean or perineal scar

  • Concerns about returning to exercise

  • Reduced strength or confidence following birth

  • Concerns about your recovery even if you don't currently have symptoms

  • C-Section Scar Management & Massage

What happens during your assessment?

Your appointment is a chance to talk openly about your pregnancy, birth and recovery, and what you would like help with.

We'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, birth experience, lifestyle and any activities you are finding difficult.

I will then carry out a physical assessment relevant to your concerns. This may include looking at your posture, movement, breathing, abdominal muscles, scars and pelvic floor function.

Where appropriate, an internal vaginal examination may be offered to assess the pelvic floor muscles more specifically. This is not compulsory. I will always explain why I am recommending an examination and ask for your consent before proceeding. You remain in control throughout your appointment.

What happens after your assessment?

Once we have completed your assessment, I will explain my findings in clear, straightforward language and answer any questions you have.

We can then agree on a personalised treatment plan. Depending on your needs, this may include pelvic floor exercises, relaxation and breathing techniques, advice around bladder or bowel habits, movement and exercise advice, Pilates, hands-on treatment or strategies to help you manage your symptoms.

Your treatment will be tailored to you — because no two bodies, births, symptoms or experiences are the same.

You do not have to wait until things are severe...

You don't have to wait until your postnatal symptoms are significantly affecting your everyday life before seeking support.

Whether you are experiencing a specific symptom, unsure whether your recovery is progressing as expected, or simply want some guidance before returning to exercise, a comprehensive postnatal assessment can be a useful first step.
